The Green Team is currently supporting a PhD student from Cornell University with her research into Environmental Stewardship in young children.
We are working with Frogstone Primary School and have 2 groups of children taking part in the 12 week study which started in September and is running until December 2024.
Child-centred approach
The children taking part in the study have fully embraced taking part in the study and are enjoying exploring the school wildlife garden. The activities are led by the children’s interest and are given a choice of activities each session.
They have loved playing in the pond area once it filled up after the rain, creating a parkour course using planks of wood.
The have looked for terrestrial and aquatic bugs, picked litter, planted daffodil bulbs, made a bug hotel and are currently making a dead hedge which will separate the play pond from the nature pond.
The school also has four chickens which we have visited every week, collected their eggs, fed them earthworms and chickenfeed. The project has also been supported by a GT volunteer, Catriona who is currently on a gap year and is enjoying working with younger children. In the final couple of weeks of the project , we hope to continue working on the dead hedge and also plant a hedge on the edge of the chicken area.
Crochet chickens!
Crochet chickens have also made an appearance at the sessions, which has prompted a girl to crochet her own chicken which she brings every week! Not an outcome we had foreseen from this research!
“the chickens make me feel calm”
“we are scientists”
“we are measuring how deep the water is”
“ I love looking after nature”
