Young people take action for nature and education
This month, a group of young people from The Green Team are taking an important message to SCOTLAND: The Big Picture Conference – and next, to the Scottish Parliament.
Inspired and motivated by their experiences over the last seven months as Green Changemakers, the young people, aged 14+, have been exploring their relationship with nature and the role education can play in strengthening it.
Their discussions sparked an idea: a “re-rooting” of Curriculum for Excellence, with nature embedded more firmly at the heart of education in Scotland.
That idea has now grown into The Green Team’s Re-root our Curriculum campaign and petition. It calls for more outdoor and place-based learning and greater opportunities for young people to learn about and connect with Scotland’s nature and culture.
SCOTLAND: The Big Picture Conference
On 19 September, 12 Changemakers take this message to this year’s SCOTLAND: The Big Picture Conference in Perth.
Scotland’s leading rewilding event brings together a diverse community of people united by a shared commitment to nature recovery.
For the young people, it is an opportunity to build on their knowledge and experience, meet people involved in the rewilding movement, hear different perspectives and discover what is already working.
It is also a fantastic opportunity to take their ideas beyond The Green Team and gather support and signatures for the Re-root our Curriculum petition.
From an idea to action
The campaign has grown directly from the young people’s discussions about nature, education and the changes they would like to see.
At the conference, they will be able to speak with people who have knowledge and experience in this field, test their ideas, hear different perspectives and build support for their case.
And Perth is just the next step.
In October, we plan to take the Re-root our Curriculum petition and wider case to MSPs and the Scottish Government – taking an idea that began in conversations at The Green Team to advocate for long term change.
