Celebrating our chair, Hamish
The Green Team is celebrating our outstanding trustee and chair, Hamish Wood, as he wins the Trustee Volunteer Award at the Inspiring Volunteer Awards 2025.
Hamish has been a much-valued and hard-working member of The Green Team Board since 2020, and took on the role of Chair in 2022. During this time, he has really got to know the organisation at every level, so he fully understands how things work.
As chair, Hamish not only fulfils every part of the role as is expected, he goes above and beyond. He follows up on everything and is always keen to do things better, researching new ideas, encouraging external development and support, so the Board of Trustees can be the best they can be.
For example, Hamish introduced the SCVO Good Governance guide as a benchmark against which the Board measure themselves to continue to develop excellence. He also conducted a Board skills audit and a survey of effectiveness.
Hamish recently worked closely with an external facilitator around Board effectiveness, recognising that the best time to make things work even better is when things are stable and not in crisis. Thanks to this approach, The Green Team continues to look to the future and build on our strengths.
Over the last 2 years, The Green Team has been through a period of change with new office premises, a new Co-CEO model and new trustees recruited to the Board. Hamish has provided exactly what the organisation needed at this point which was stability and good working relationships.
Penny, our Co-CEO, described the qualities and impact Hamish brings to the organisation,
‘Hamish is very diligent and takes his volunteering role very seriously. It is one of the best qualities in a chair, to have someone who is reliable and organised and, despite gaps between meetings, can always pick up the threads and continue to push things forward.
‘Hamish has a very gentle nature but also has strength. He supports other Board members and is dynamic and structured, recognising when things could change for the better. He is also skilled at finding the right person for the job.
‘The Green Team Board of Trustees is currently a very organised, collegiate, exciting committee of diverse people and opinions who work well together to lead the organisation.
‘This leadership is down to Hamish and the way he develops good working relationships with people. He gets the best out of everyone.’
Hamish, pictured accepting his Award from the Lord Provost, is a great ambassador for The Green Team,
‘I was honoured to be nominated for a Volunteer Award and I am fortunate to be part of a fully engaged and collaborative Board where everyone plays a constructive part in the governance responsibilities.
‘The Green Team is extremely well managed, does amazing work with young people and fully supports the Board in its purpose. I am delighted to be part of such a fantastic organisation especially in its 30th year and look forward to further supporting its excellent work.’
