Green Schools
Beeslack High School, Penicuik Each
year the Green Team works with S2 students at Beeslack who are working towards
their John Muir Discovery award. The school is very committed to the Award and
during June each year the focus is very much on John Muir. The Green Team staff
and volunteers come in to help deliver the Conserve challenge of the Award to
180 young people in one day!
Groups of up to 15 young
people with a leader and member of teaching staff carry out conservation work
in the school grounds and neighbouring Beeslack Wood. Path improvements, tree
planting, drainage ditch digging and removal of invasive plant were all carried
out this year plus the popular burn clearance best done from in the water. George
Watson's College, Edinburgh For
the last 2 years we have worked with students at George Watson's College, Edinburgh
as part of a week of outdoor activities. This year groups visited Corstorphine
Hill, Hopetoun House Estate and Ironmills Park in Dalkeith. Each group took part
in some practical conservation work such as path improvements, fence repairs and
woodland management. Time was also spent with the local ranger learning about
the special qualities of these environments for wildlife and taking part in some
fun environmental education activities.
Report
of a Green Schools project ...Tuesday 25th of May I & my school went on
a trip with the Green Team at Vogrie Park. We did a game called through the rope
hoop and it was very good fun. The leader was called Kate and her dog was called
Tim Tam, she was barking mad. We started off by using loppers and saws to cut
and saw bits of the tree down. Then every body made a bonfire, before lunch Gill
fell over, Harry got stuck in the bushes and I got my foot stuck in the same pot
hole that Gill fell over. After lunch we did orienteering I was in the running
team and we came first to get back to the campfire to make chocolate bananas.
Then we talked about what we hated and liked about their day there and then we
went to the park and then we went back to school and then we all went home. THE
