 Green
Shoots is the social inclusion project of The Green Team that delivers customised
practical environmental and outdoor programmes to groups of young people from
Edinburgh and the Lothians. Each project is unique, set up through consultation,
to meet the needs of the young people and those of their organisation. The
young people visit local green spaces or countryside sites to take part in a practical
conservation project. Practical tasks may include cutting back invasive species,
tree planting, coppicing and path work. The groups get
involved in a range of informal environmental education activities through games,
sensory activities, shelter building, fire lighting and orienteering. The activities
aim to encourage independence through exploration, build confidence and team working
skills, and sharing within the peer group. These
projects aim to develop an understanding of the environment as well as building
self esteem and promoting positive behaviour. Participants work as a team where
trust and respect are an important part of the method of working. There is a great
sense of achievement in completing a task which has improved access to a site
for local people or improved the environment for wildlife.
During
a Green Shoots programme with The Green Team, young people can participate in
a John Muir Award (Discovery level) and work towards the volunteering or skills
section of the Duke of Edinburghs Award. Home
